When the world came to a standstill due to the pandemic in March 2020, live music disappeared from the stage. For Andrew Stockdale, frontman of Wolfmother, this actually meant a creative explosion. From his home studio, he played all the instruments and worked on Rock Out, the sixth Wolfmother album. At a time when mental health was central, Stockdale used the healing power of rock 'n' roll as an outlet. Rock Out is a raw, energetic escape from coronamonotony: from the British rock influences on "Feelin Love" to the introspective, riff-driven intensity of "Humble".
The album was largely recorded locally and intuitively, with live drums by Hamish Rosser and contributions from Paul Pilsnenks and Alexx McConnell, among others. Rock Out feels like an ode to the great riff masters of yesteryear, an imaginary 1982 stadium tour captured in modern recordings and ready for the digital age.
