Young people with intellectual disabilities work at South Park Theatre this month

A world where everyone is allowed to participate, where everyone is connected and everyone is seen as full: that is the world Superpower stands for. For people with intellectual disabilities, isolation is a major cause of reduced social competence and a limited social network. Everyone deserves to be empowered; it is time for change. That is why Superkracht enables young adults with intellectual disabilities to discover and use their talents in the cultural sector. Their needs are listened to and they cooperate on an equal level.

Discovering talents and participating equally
Superkracht has developed a training in which young adults with intellectual disabilities discover their talents. They reflect in groups on their own abilities and formulate learning goals. Then their challenges and passion are linked to the work they will do as volunteers during festivals and events, at pop stages and theatres. Here, they work on an equal level with staff and volunteers. As a result, they develop their social skills, expand their network and learn new skills.

Working at Sniester and Zuiderparktheater
In May, Superpower team members work at the Zuiderpark Theatre. For example, they tap beers, welcome visitors or lug instruments behind the scenes. Superpower Tessa is all set: "I think it would be fun to be a hostess. I can learn a lot there because many different things happen. Then I can welcome people and help them find their way around. And make people happy so they have a nice evening or day and go home feeling good." By making team members' talents visible rather than their disabilities, Superpower breaks down prejudices and strengthens positive perceptions of people with disabilities. It becomes clear that they are valuable team members with passion, pride and enthusiasm, just like team members without disabilities.

Making apparent 'impossibilities' possible
Superpower is an initiative of Possibilize and is realised in close cooperation with VTV The Hague. By thinking and acting in terms of possibilities, this project has been developed that uniquely contributes to the inclusion of people with disabilities in the cultural sector. People are set in motion to use their talents and make dreams come true. In this way, everyone makes a positive difference in their own lives and inspires others to do the same. This applies to team members of Superpower as well as the volunteers, staff and visitors of partners.
