Netherlands Summer Orchestra
ZomerOrkest Nederland (ZON for short) aims to promote wind music in the Netherlands. ZON's concerts are organised in an informal setting in the open air. All aspects of modern wind music are covered at ZON's concerts, from original works for symphonic wind orchestra to transcriptions of classical works. Pop, jazz and film music are also covered.
ZON has been touring annually during the summer holidays since 1987 and has become a household name in the Dutch wind music world. Every year, ZON gives as many young musicians as possible the chance to play in a good and motivated orchestra. To achieve this, ZON is composed every year of amateurs and conservatory students aged 16 to 23, from all over the Netherlands. This year, the orchestra is conducted by Twan Cox and Jan-Aart Ponstein. Every year, ZON awards a composition commission to a young, talented composer. This year, Julio Domingo wrote the piece Orion, the Hunter. This year's soloist is 18-year-old Ties Janssen from Veldhoven. During the tour, Ties will perform the piece Fantasy for Marimba By Hayato Hirose play.
